VSFS eINTERNSHIP APPS DEADLINE: MIDNIGHT TONIGHT (ET)

Are you a college or university student, looking to improve and show off your social media, writing, web design, or graphic design skills? Through the State Department's Virtual Student Federal Service internship program, students have the opportunity to hone their skills through eInternships.

Please see below for a sampling of the VSFS internship positions. Remember: the deadline is midnight tonight!

NIH: Designing for the Crowd: Biomedical Innovation Intern
(Project code: NIH-USA-3)

NIH wants you! Hone and show off your writing and graphic design skills as a part of the NIH open innovation community! Share your writing talents in blog posts and your social media savvy in communicating with the public, all at the largest biomedical research funding agency in the world.

As virtual intern you will assist the working group by:

  • Creating designs for the hub, ranging from images for blog posts to infographics about citizen science, as needed

  • Producing other digital materials for to be used and shared by the NIH Citizen Science Working Group

  • Developing and designing an array of digital communications, including content for newsletters, websites, and social media (@CitSciBio)

  • Creating infographics, slides, handout materials, and other content for sharing at scientific meetings and for posting on the web (i.e., citscibio.org) as needed

  • Drafting tweets (evergreen and new content) for @CitSciBio (monthly).

  • Writing blog entries relevant to biomedical crowdsourcing and citizen science as needed

GSA: Citizen Science Communicator
(Project code: GSA-USA-7)

The @FedCitSci team needs virtual interns! Give your ideas on how to communicate the impact of the public participating voluntarily in the scientific process to address real-world issues. You will be asked to analyze approaches and provide input on how to improve a catalog of federally supported citizen science projects, and consult with GSA as they design a process to add new content to a toolkit to assist federal practitioners with designing and maintaining their projects. Suggestions for how GSA may more effectively use social media will also be welcomed.

GSA: CitizenScience.gov Website Developer

Help accelerate innovation across the U.S. government working with the CitizenScience.gov Program! GSA needs your help to refine functional elements of CitizenScience.gov to better serve the federal workforce, their partners, and the public. Help create a process to revise content for a catalog of federally supported citizen science projects and keep this content up to data, and facilitate the addition of new content into a toolkit to assist federal practitioners with designing and maintain. You may be involved in and able to learn about web design, use of social media, and programming in HTML and CSS.

USGS: Using Citizen Science and Public Data to Discover New Species Movements
(Project code: USGS-USA-3)

Heard of biodiversity apps like iNaturalist and eBird? Thousands of regular, smart Americans are recording sightings of birds and flowers and frogs on their phones. USGS wants to see this information get back to the National Park Service so they know what and when species are new.
USGS is looking for interns to help them work with packaging the results of their data analysis to share with national parks around the country, so they can use the information to improve their management (e.g., of invasive species) and inform their publics. The work will involve some creativity and reports will be produced that the interns can get authorship on, given that they meet the time and effort requested.
